If You're Programming Country Like Top 40, 'You're Making A Mistake'
'Country Isn't CHR'
A new INTEGR8 RESEARCH blog titled "Why Country Isn't CHR," takes a close look at how Country fans consume new music, concluding that Country should not be treated the same as Top 40. In the first of a three part series on the topic, the blog states, “If you treat Country as if it’s CHR from NASHVILLE, you’re making a mistake.”

Citing data that shows Top 40 listeners are sick of songs once they’re between 20-28 weeks old, INTEGR8 says that’s typically when songs are past their prime in that format and moved out of current rotation. But in Country, that’s just about the time most listeners are most into hit songs. “Fifty five percent (55%) of the Top 10 most-streamed Country songs are between 13 and 36-weeks-old,” says the blog, "compared to Top 40, where the most-streamed songs are between 8-24 weeks old.” Their conclusion: "If you’re automatically moving Country songs out of your current categories at 26 weeks, you’re moving songs when listeners still want to hear them a lot.” Read the entire blog here.

How Not To
(Warner Bros./WAR)

YES. Okay, this is probably ‘how not to’ write a spotlight track, but this is how I feel about this song: Just, yes. Love songs are magical and wonderful and all of that, and heartbreak songs also have their special place, but something about "moving on" – or not moving on – really clicks with me – I won't get into that... "How Not To" is the perfect combination of tempo, cleverly written lyrics, and some kickass Dan + Shay harmonies. This song gives me that feeling – you know, when you feel like a song is speaking to you? Yeah. Well. This: "You're like second nature baby, you're just like breathin' / A melody that you hear and you can't forget / The time goes by and I still need you / Yeah, you're worth the heartbreak and regret." Can we pause and appreciate that? Try and tell me this isn't 100% relatable – that you don't literally or figuratively compare someone to a melody? Because I have. And then there's the chorus – with the hook and those consistently strong vocals we love so much: "But I don't know how not to think about you / When it's late at night and quiet / And I know that I ought to be the one who is strong and just moves on / But I probably turn down your road, knock knock on your door / Fall back in your arms, wake up in the morning / Hating myself for the way that I can't help the way I still want you / I just don't know how not to, how not to, how not to." Dan + Shay have another great single off their "Obsessed" album, and if you couldn't tell, I'm obsessed with it. As summer flings and romances end, I’m sure that every *single* person will instantly relate to this – if they didn’t already before. I know there are a million songs on your desk, but this one is special – so give it some extra love in your music meeting.
