Cumulus Country Swap In Amarillo: The Armadillo, Nash Icon To Trade Frequencies January 15th
Swappin'
CUMULUS/AMARILLO, TX will swap frequencies on its two Country stations, with TEXAS Red Dirt Country focused KPUR (107.1 THE ARMADILLO) moving from 107.1 to the more powerful Class C signal at 95.7 FM, while mainstream Country sister KARX(NASH ICON 95.7) segues to 107.1 FM as NASH ICON 107.1. "The TEXAS Red Dirt audience is made up of the most loyal listeners I have ever seen, and I am excited for what this move means for them and for the TEXAS Red Dirt Artists," said CUMULUS/AMARILLO,TX VP/Market Mgr. SHANNON URTON.

OM/PD CRAIG VAUGHN added, "TEXAS Red Dirt music has grown in popularity to the extent that 5,000 watts of power just wasn't enough anymore. Moving to 95.7 gives KPUR 100,000 watts of power, so we can satisfy the demand we've had from the smaller towns surrounding AMARILLO. It's a true testament to CUMULUS MEDIA CEO MARY BERNER's vision of letting the local markets make local decisions about what is best for them."

Country Takes Its Annual December PPM Beating
December PPMs: Country Off
As if those few extra pounds from your just-completed holiday eating binge weren't enough to make you feel inadequate this first week back, PPM results from DECEMBER show Country radio took its annual whacking at the hands of CHRISTMAS-formatted AC stations last month. Among persons 6+, Country dipped 7.5-7.1 from NOVEMBER to DECEMBER. Country was up one tenth compared to DECEMBER of 2016, so we've got that going for us. The format took a bigger hit with 18-34s, sinking to 7.7 last month, off from NOVEMBER's 8.3 share. DECEMBER's showing was Country's lowest share with Millennials in 2017. Year-to-year results were similarly disappointing, off 0.4 from DECEMBER 2016. Country suffered with its traditional 25-54 core audience, too, falling 7.1-6.6 NOVEMBER-DECEMBER, its lowest output for 2017 in that demo. Year-to-year among 25-54s, Country was down 6.8-6.6 compared to DECEMBER 2016.

For AC radio, last month's result (a 10.5 share nationally among persons 6+) represents a high water mark for that format in DECEMBER, dating back to the beginning of comprehensive PPM measurement, according to this month's NIELSEN INSIGHTS analysis of PPM shares. Not that many Country programmers are surprised or dismayed by these holiday numbers anymore, but things will likely get worse before they improve, as the Holiday month results are due later this month, beginning MONDAY, JANUARY 22nd.

Michael Tyler
Hey Mama
(Reviver Records)
You may be best familiar with Reviver Records' Michael Tyler from his co-write credit on a little tune that sang about being "somewhere on a beach sipping something strong," but now he is hitting the Country radio world in a different capacity: with a song all his own called "Hey Mama." Now, before you stress out about how long it's been since you last gave your mother a call, take a moment to consider what Tyler has to offer. We already knew he had great songwriting skills, but "Hey Mama" really shows off his fascinating story-telling. "Hey mama / Remember when you said I'd know it when I know it / And, remember when you said I'd find it without looking / I've tried bars and back seat cars / Yeah, I've put my heart through it / I know it's late, but / I called ya / To tell ya // Hey mama / I think I found the right one / Hey now mama / She's a lot better then the last one / Gonna do it right this time / Gonna make her mine all mine / Hey mama / I think I found the right one." Tyler tells the classic story of finding "The One" in a unique way -- in his OWN way. Give your radio station "all of the feels" by adding this record. Okay, and now you can go call your mama!
