Disasters
Beware: Disasters create obvious loss but lots of big winners embedded inside as well and some far less obvious losses.
JJ Watts is a big winner in the Houston disaster and Joel Osteen is a far less obvious loser in the same. A tweet to pray for everyone while the doors of his church were closed to those affected by the storm may have been one of an innocent out-of-sequence messaging approach (open the doors then send the prayer vs. prayer offered before doors open), but either way, that negative image is now burned into our minds (like Bush flying over New Orleans ... which lead to Trump on the ground even before flood waters subsided; this did not score a win for Trump, but it did avoid a loss had he not showed up).
KTRH is another huge winner and will carry that win with them for many years to come by simply doing what they were supposed to do. However, If KTRH, while doing great work, would have found just one listener who wanted to express their opinion and it was "Where are Spotify, Sirius, SnapChat and Pandora now? Remember this moment with KTRH when it is time to pledge your support" ...
Would KTRH have taken a ton of heat for this sort of listener actuality in the press? Yes
Would the heat in the press reached CEOs all over the U.S.? Most likely
Would that have moved the needle to impress on some non-believers that radio is the only live, local magic weapon if used properly? YesSeize the Moment -- Weathering the heat is at times the only way to make a point.
