Navigating Social Media During Election2020
November 2, 2020

As we enter “Election Week,” VP, Social + Innovation with Lori Lewis Media, Alyssa Page serves a reminder for us all to choose our words wisely.
Your screen time may have gone way up throughout 2020.
No judgement, scrolling through Twitter has taken up much of my beauty sleep this year. We're living through challenging times; COVID-19 has forced companies nationwide to make cuts, downsize and restructure, leaving those still employed with more responsibility.
The key word here is responsibility.
It's a huge part of the privilege of interacting on Social Media. Over the last few months there has been several on-air talent losing their gigs or suspended after firing off on Twitter, other social media accounts and podcasts.
We need to remember (especially in the heat of the moment) that words matter. Being the “ambassador” of a brand, tweets/posts/comments need to be handled with thoughtfulness and acumen.
We need to be mindful of how people are becoming hyperactive from (doom) scrolling on social platforms.
We need to be aware of how our content will feel with this heightened sensitivity. Not only are personalities forming reputations and building on their own legacy, they are also representing their stations, companies and all advertisers & charities attached to each brand.
In a year where a pandemic has filled many of us with uncertainty and fear, and now heading into “Election Week” (that no doubt will last longer than just this week), people are looking for doses of "feel-good" and some sanity to surround ourselves with.
How can you help everyone feel part of something meaningful, using social platforms as an outlet for a sense of belonging?
As Jim VandeHei with Axios shares in his piece on Election Night, “All we can do is be smart about what’s to come, and wise in our responses.”
Choose words wisely. – Alyssa Page
