Unpolished Is The New Polished

“More than half of consumers would rather follow normal people on social media than celebrities, as they find the content they post more authentic,” that is according to new research released by Savanta.
Nearly 9 in 10 consumers said they seek out authentic user-generated content before deciding to buy a product they’ve not personally tried before.
The study also revealed that 80% of consumers think influencers & celebrities should be made to disclose whether photoshop or filters have been used on their posts.
There’s no doubt unpolished is in – people are looking for content that feels more natural; people who feel more trustworthy.
Brands openly embracing user-generated content – creating unofficial ambassadors with the audiences, are also more inviting.
This brief but important study should be highly considered for every brand in the social space.
Ask yourself:
Are You Too Polished?
There’s something disarming when we share the raw, the real, maybe even the awkward parts of us.
When we do, our actions show people it’s OK to be that same way – we all have a story, we all have bumbly parts.
As we’ve talked about for months:
Unpolished is the New Polished.
Are You Too Self-Involved?
The best content is relatable or informative, interactive, with an outward focus.
Inclusiveness is key.
Remember the human element of social media and continue to ask how can you be interesting to people who don’t know you, maybe don’t care?
You can start by helping them see themselves in your content.
Are You Not Using “You?”
Using the word, “you,” is one of the more powerful words in any content. And it makes sense. People want to know the content is relevant to them.
Are You Triggering Curiosity?
Are your words persuading? Captivating? Writing in the social space requires emotion and a little intense desire to know more.
Are You Missing Emotion?
Content evoking emotion is more likely to be shared than stuff not “emotionally charged.”
