The Upside Of Imperfection – Key Steps For Being Real
September 6, 2022
-
As more brands use video for increased awareness, engagement, and growth in the social space, often there’s the misconception it has to be big, bold, and fancy.
And that’s just not the case. (Which is great!) New research conducted by Meta found stronger results with unpolished, lo-fi, mobile-shot content. It comes off as more human and relatable. This echoes a 2019 Meta study for Instagram Stories. There was an 84% likelihood that self-recorded content outperformed polished, studio-shot creative.
Why this matters?
We are experiencing "Perfection Fatigue."
Another piece of research from YPulse found 90% of 18–36-year-olds like it when people showcase their flaws and imperfections, while 60% think it's okay to show imperfect images of spokespeople or products.
Culture is driven by people, not brands. And the brands leveraging social media for awareness and growth are entertaining and inspiring just like the real people and friends we enjoy, not interrupting on the platforms.
Key Steps For Authenticity:
- Socialize: you should be spending more time interacting with people than posting content.
- Don’t Go Crazy: too much posting creates fatigue for you (and the fans).
- Be Thoughtful: the real power in social media is to resonate, not just to be seen
- Peel Away The Layers: behind-the-scenes never gets old.
- Weird & Whimsey: humor can fade the line between the brand and the fans.
- Enjoy Yourself: people can sense when content is forced.
Perfection fatigue is real.
And that should be exciting for all of us.
Because the more real we can be – the more we permit others to be imperfect, too!
