SET THE SCENE: What's the morning radio landscape like in your market... If we we're to fly into town today, what could we expect between the hours of 6a-10a?
Those 2 Girls: Lots of syndication. Not many local morning shows still exist but the ones who do are kicking butt and taking names because Miami/Ft. Lauderdale likes their morning personalities to be "on the scene." And Miami is definitely the only place that we know of that has an all-female morning show that's totally catered to women 25-54. On 97.3 The Coast, you get two professional women of different backgrounds and social status-one married with children and the other single no kids and always looking-discussing life and the changes that happen every day in it. Pretty much, you're eavesdropping on your two best girlfriends' conversation every morning.
THE SHOW:Those Two Girls In The MorningTHE STATION:WFLC-FM "97.3 The Coast"THE CITY:Miami, FLTHE FORMAT:Hot ACTHE CAST:Julie Guy & Tamara G.Resume Time
Give us brief rundown on each of you, your personal history, your radio bio, and what brought you together
Those 2 Girls: Julie Guy: 16 years in the biz. Started at WSHE in Miami in 1991 and did EVERY single air shift across the dial in South Florida until she landed on The Coast in 2002: Tamara G. (Gant) 16 years in the biz. First gig was writing news for KDMX in Dallas in 1991 and has worked in AC/UAC/Urban/Newstalk. We originally worked together for five months in 2005 when Tamara was added to the morning show at Coast she then left to do another morning gig for nine months before coming back to The Coast as one of "Those 2 Girls in the Morning."
What's It All About?
Describe your show, your personalities, and the "premise" listeners wake up to every morning.
Those 2 Girls: Tamara plays the role very well of the single professional looking for Mr. Right and basically "keeping it real" at all times and not pulling any punches when it comes to something she really believes in. Julie is a harried mother of two who "keeps it real" by dispelling the fantasy and fairytale of marriage and children-plus she continues to try to hook up Tamara with every single man in South Florida (and sometimes married) until she finds out their status. Basically she questions them when they call in and wears them down until they give in or admit that they're married.
Prep 101
Let's talk prep. Who does it?
Those 2 Girls: Our producer, Steev Soto, does the bulk of our prep but life is prep and we are always, always on top of what's going on-in the news, in the entertainment world and in each other's personal lives-which often times becomes fodder for the show. Tamara does the newscasts every 30 minutes and both of us take calls and edit them.
What's the one feature, bit, or show element you feel the most confident about?
Those 2 Girls: Our topics because they're relatable to every single listener and our demographic, which is 25-54 females. But strangely enough, we have a HUGE male base and they call in all the time.
Most Memorable
Name your most memorable radio moment. (Good or bad!)
Those 2 Girls: Julie said the "f" word on the radio. Thank God it was the Active Rock format and the PD was out of town! Tamara: The day it was announced October 2003 that James T. and Marvin Dixon and I would not be a morning show team on 99 Jamz anymore. I cried on the air and couldn't do my newscast. James T. had to go to cut to a commercial.
Celebs-N-Stuff
Name your most memorable CELEB interview. (Good or bad!)
Those 2 Girls: Julie: My best was Richie Sambora and my worst was Lenny Kravitz because he completely and totally intimidated me. I froze! My second Favorite was Fred Durst of Limp Biskit when he asked me out-he was the only one who EVER asked me out! Tamara: My best was Lionel Richie and coming a close second was Jeffery Osborne. Both were so professional and knew exactly how to play to the callers and to everyone who came into the studio. My worst? I'm not really sure. I worked at a Hip-Hop station and there were plenty (particularly when we had to talk to them early in the morning after they had stayed out all night long partying in Miami. Geez!)
Quick Word Association
Illegal Immigration
Those 2 Girls: Don't even go there. We DO live in Miami, you know.
Jessica Simpson
Those 2 Girls: Why are we playing her songs? NO ONE likes her
Songs in AM Drive
Those 2 Girls: Too many... (8 an hour)
Politics
Those 2 Girls: No comment
Program Directors
Those 2 Girls: Some are good coaches and some should be sittin' on the bench
X-tra Pointers
Throw us a freakin' bone, name one thing about yourself or about each other, that most people don't know. Be honest.
Those 2 Girls: Tamara: I owned a "Beat It" jacket in 1983. (scary) Julie: I used to chase hair bands to try to meet them. I SWEAR I was going to be Mrs. Sambora, or Bon Jovi, whoever liked me first.
Your two cents? If there was one piece of advice you could give, what would it be?
Those 2 Girls: Don't have an ego!! You ARE ABSOLUTELY replaceable and learn everything you can about every aspect of the business. Also, don't be so quick to say "you'll never do that." And finally, don't burn your bridges it's a very, very small radio world we live in and you usually end up working with the same people over and over again (case in point, the two of us. We're now working together in the same building for the THIRD time together.)
