EMMIS Classic Rocker WLUP (97.9 THE LOOP)/CHICAGO staffers have voted 14-7 in favor of continued representation by AFTRA, reports the SUN-TIMES' ROBERT FEDER.
The vote, which was supervised by the NATIONAL LABOR RELATIONS BOARD, was prompted by a petition from new staffers who questioned the need for union representation and objected to paying dues and fees. Once the objections became known, station management strongly urged staffers to cut ties with AFTRA.
"The men and women who supported AFTRA have sent a strong message -- a message management cannot ignore," said AFTRA's CHICAGO local executive director EILEEN WILLENBORG. "With this vote they affirm that AFTRA representation is vital to assure fairness and equity in wages and working conditions. These broadcasters need a voice in the work place and AFTRA is that voice."
