CRTC Turns Down Application For New FM In Squamish, BC

Says No

The CRTC has denied MATTHEW GORDON MCBRIDE's application for a new station with a Rock format at 89.1 FM in SQUAMISH, BC.  MCBRIDE had proposed a local service with local hosts, but competitors WESTWAVE BROADCASTING and ROGERS BROADCASTING contended that SQUAMISH couldn't support another station and ROGERS added that its regional MOUNTAIN FM format, aired on CISQ/SQUAMISH and two other stations, afforded a "relevant and high quality local service in each community."  In addition, a new station was approved for nearby WHISTLER, which the CRTC said would impact the financial performance of the existing SQUAMISH stations.

In addition, GOLDEN WEST BROADCASTING has applied to move its Country CKMW-A/WINKLER, MB from AM to FM at 103.7 with 100,000 watts maximum ERP; the CBC has asked to swap the facilities of its CBCX-FM-1/EDMONTON (rebroadcaster of CBCX/CALGARY) and French PREMIERE CHAINE affiliate CHFA-10-FM/EDMONTON; and DUFFERIN COMMUNICATIONS has applied for a new Soft AC/Easy Listening station on 106.7 FM at HUDSON/ST-LAZARE, QC.
