The emergency radio station in PUYALLUP, WA broadcast an erroneous volcano and mudslide warning for an hour WEDNESDAY, panicking some local residents before the problem was corrected. The warning that a huge volcano-caused mudflow was headed for the valley below repeated on 1580 AM for an hour, including the words "this is not a test," and is being blamed on a software error that interpreted a normal test signal as real. A listener call to officials led to confirmation that the lahar (mudflow) was not cascading from the mountain.
