Bill Pending In Mississippi Would Ban State Agencies From Advertising On Radio, TV

MISSISSIPPI State Senator MERLE FLOWERS (R-SOUTHAVEN) has proposed a bill to bar state agencies from advertising.  NBC affiliate WLBT-TV/JACKSON reports that the bill would block agencies from using radio and TV ads to promote their programs, but exempts newspapers, legal notices, job listings and some federally-required PSAs, and would require bidding if agencies must use state dollars for advertising.  

"Millions and millions of taxpayers' dollars are going for a whole bunch of bogus programs that are advertised all over the state and we're going to put a stop to it," FLOWERS told the station.

The bill, SB 2736, has passed the Accountability, Efficiency and Transparency Committee and is pending in the full Senate.
