Talk Of Successor Starts As BBC Director General Mark Thompson Plans Exit

Speculation about the successor to MARK THOMPSON as Director General of the BBC has started in earnest now that THOMPSON has announced that he will exit the network later this year.  THOMPSON announced MONDAY that he will leave at some point after the LONDON OLYMPICS this SUMMER.

THOMPSON has been Director General at the BBC for almost eight years.  His tenure has seen several crises, including budget and service cuts and the RUSSELL BRAND-JONATHAN ROSS "Sachsgate" controversy, as well as success in ratings on TV and radio.

Names being reported in the press as possible successors include COO CAROLINE THOMSON, BBC NEWS chief HELEN BOADEN, Director of Television GEORGE ENTWISTLE, and ITV Controller of Television PETER FINCHAM.
