Judge Rejects Dissidents' Motion For Injunction Against SAG-AFTRA Merger

An attempt by dissidents in the SCREEN ACTORS GUILD (SAG) to block the union's proposed merger with the AMERICAN FEDERATION OF TELEVISION AND RADIO ARTISTS (AFTRA) through a preliminary injunction was denied TODAY by a federal judge.  VARIETY reports that U.S. District Court Judge JAMES OTERO turned down a motion for an injunction to block the merger in a suit filed by a group of SAG members led by actors MARTIN SHEEN, ED HARRIS, and ED ASNER.

The suit alleged that union leaders failed to conduct due diligence in moving forward with the merger, but the judge said that the union had not violated any labor laws and granting the injunction would stop the merger proces and therefore benefit the plaintiffs by signaling to the electorate that the union had done something illegal.

SAG and AFTRA members are in the process of voting on the merger.  Ballots were mailed to members last month; the merger requires a 60% approval rate.
