THIS WEEK IN CONSUMER ELECTRONICS (TWICE) reports that CLEAR CHANNEL will offer real-time traffic information over HD Radio by the end of the year. According to the report, company exec JEFF LITTLEJOHN revealed that the approximately 100 stations in 48 markets will broadcast real-time traffic info through HD Radio initially, and that eventually that number would spread to encompass all CLEAR CHANNEL stations. The report also says that HD Radio will allow CLEAR CHANNEL to deliver the data almost 20 times faster than the RDS network on which the company currently operates.
The above report was confirmed further today when ALL ACCESS obtained a CLEAR CHANNEL internal memo announcing that the company's TOTAL TRAFFIC NETWORK won the award for "Best Telematics Mobile Content Provider" at the 2006 TELEMATICS DETROIT SHOW. At the end of the memo, which was penned by LITTLEJOHN, the exec mentions that TOTAL TRAFFIC NETWORK "will expand even further by adding the traffic service to our HD Radio stations" at the end of the year.
