The BILLBOARD MUSIC AWARDS 2012 from the MGM GRAND in LAS VEGAS turned out to be a grand night for ADELE grabbing 12 awards, LMFAO walked away with six, COLDPLAY won four, LIL WAYNE has three of them, LADY GAGA grabbed a pair, as did CASTING CROWNS.
The show paid tribute to ROBIN GIBB, who passed earlier in the day SUNDAY (NET NEWS 5/20) and DONNA SUMMER, who died last week (NET NEWS 5/17), as well as a terrific tribute to WHITNEY HOUSTON.
LMFAO kicked off the show, and BIEBER was the evening's first winner, taking the Top Social Artist award. An emotional BIEBER said, "I just want to say how much of a blessing it's been ... the past three or four years, growing up in front of everybody ... I want to thank all my fans, because the Internet is where I got my start, and all my fans have helped me get to this position."
TAYLOR SWIFT won the Woman Of The Year award, telling the audience "I just love you so much, I'm just so humbled and honored by this."
The show's co-host JULIE BOWEN paid tribute to late BEE GEES member ROBIN GIBB, who finally lost a long battle with cancer. The show also featured a tribute to DONNA SUMMER by NATASHA BEDINGFIELD, and one for WHITNEY HOUSTON, featuring JOHN LEGEND and JORDIN SPARKS.
KATY PERRY received the Spotlight Award for tying a record set by MICHAEL JACKSON of five #1 hits from the same album. PERRY said she was "incredibly honored. Most of all, of course, I always say that the people have the power, so I want to say thank you to the glittering, gorgeous community of fans out there." She also debuted her new single "Wide Awake" on the show.
