The WASHINGTON State Supreme Court heard arguments THURSDAY in the free speech case involving Talk KVI-A/SEATTLE and two hosts' discussions of a ballot initiative. A Superior Court ruling last summer said that the station must report the value of airtime devoted by hosts KIRBY WILBUR and JOHN CARLSON to the topic of a gas tax rollback initiative as a campaign donation, a ruling widely criticized as antithetical to free media. The lower court judge ruled that WILBUR and CARLSON used their shows to organize the ballot measure campaign and recruit volunteers.
