Amidst the most severe blood shortage in nearly 15 years, classic rock fans across the SOUTHLAND answered a life-saving call to action and selflessly donated blood during the 31st Annual KLOS Blood Drive. Thousands rolled up their sleeves to help patients in immediate need of a transfusion and also replenished the community's severely depleted blood reserves.
The KLOS Blood Drive -- considered the nation's largest media supported blood drive -- concluded a five county, 20-site tour that intended to collect 9,550 blood products. SOUTHLAND donors responded wholeheartedly to help KLOS and the RED CROSS breeze past expectations and collect a total of 9,681 blood products.
"The need for blood is constant -- especially in emergency situations," said RED CROSS/SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CEO CLIFF NUMARK. "Our reserves were depleted and we were facing challenges brought on by a national SUMMER shortage. The RED CROSS appreciates the thousands of KLOS listeners and donors who participated in this life-saving effort. However, the need still remains as the blood continues to go to local hospitals just as quickly as it is coming in. We greatly appreciate the support of KLOS, our donors, volunteers and site sponsors that poured their hearts into the 31st anniversary of this incredible effort. Again, it was a remarkable success."
