After nearly a month-long BARRY MANILOW-only stunt broadcast (NET NEWS 5/16), BRAVO MIC COMMUNICATIONS KXPZ (BARRY 99)/LAS CRUCES, NM has finally officially launched as "THE ROCKET 99.5," a Rock outlet.
Explains BRAVO MIC COMMUNICATIONS EVP MIKE McKAY, "We got great response but now it’s time to get down to business. Hits like 'Mandy' and 'Copacabana' have been swapped for tunes like TOOL’s 'Vicarious' and ROB ZOMBIE’s 'American Witch.' Listeners will hear a few older favorites from METALLICA and LED ZEPPELIN, but the focus will be on modern rock."
Added PD KC COUNTS, "We looked very carefully at the market and decided there was a hole for this type of format in LAS CRUCES. We actually came up with the name for the station before it was even for sale. With a name like THE ROCKET, what else could we do?"
