ENTERCOM Sports WEEI-A-F/BOSTON "THE BIG SHOW" afternoon host GLENN ORDWAY managed to land in the national sports news THURSDAY (9/6) when embattled BOSTON RED SOX manager BOBBY VALENTINE threatened to punch him in the mouth during their weekly call-in segment.
ORDWAY asked VALENTINE, whose job is widely assumed to be in jeopardy after the SOX' poor performance this season, about talk that the manager had "checked out" of the season, drawing a fiery response from VALENTINE, who said, "What an embarrassing thing to say. If I were there right now, I'd punch you right in the mouth. Ha. How's that sound? Is that like I checked out? What an embarrassing thing. Why would somebody even -- that's stuff that a comic strip person would write. If someone's here, watching me go out at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, watching me put in the right relief pitchers to get a win, putting on a hit-and-run when it was necessary, talking to the guys after the game in the food room -- how could someone in real life say that?"
VALENTINE also objected to reports that he showed up late for SATURDAY night's game in OAKLAND, noting that he had met his son at the airport, the flight was late, but he made it to the O.COM COLISEUM by 4p for the 7:15p game, and adding that TAMPA BAY RAYS manager JOE MADDON 'gets there every day at 4:00."
