NABOB's 36th Fall Conference Wraps Up In Washington

THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF BLACK OWNED BROADCASTERS 36th Annual Fall Broadcast Management Conference was held this past week at THE OMNI SHOREHAM HOTEL in WASHINGTON, D.C. The theme was "Black Broadcasters And Election 2012 -- Our Audience Is The Key."
This year's conference featured a series of relevant topics of interest to minority broadcasters. The first panel was "Candidates and Advertisers Need Our Audience -- Smart Programmers Know How To Deliver It." It was moderated by KJLH VP/GM KAREN SLADE, who was joined by panelists WBLS NEW YORK PD SKIP DILLARD, WHUR WASHINGTON PD MAXX MYRICK, consultant TONY GRAY and ALL ACCESS Urban/Urban AC Editor JERRY BOULDING.
That session was followed by "What Financing Is Available For Station Purchases?" moderated by INNER CITIES BROADCASTING VP/Gen. Counsel LOIS WRIGHT. Joining her on the panel were Managing Dir. FAIRVIEW CAPITOL PARTNERS EDWIN SHIRLEY, Pres./CEO AIM BROADCASTING JON DOUGLAS and VP/RLJ EQUITY PARTNERS JERRY JOHNSON. The next session was "Dialogue With The Commissioners," moderated by NABOB Exec. Dir./Gen. Councel JIM WINSON. He was joined by FCC Commissioner MIGNON CLYBURN and FCC Commissioner AJIT PAI. The final session of the afternoon was "WASHINGTON Update -- What is WASHINGTON Going To Accomplish Before and After Election 2012?" JIM WINSTON also headed this session. Appearing on this panel was former FCC Commissioner MICHAEL COPPS, who is now heading Media & Democracy Reform Initiative for Common Cause, White House Office Of Public Engagement HEATHER FOSTER, Senior Policy Counsel, Legislative Dir. TIMOTHY ROBINSON, ANTIONETTE COOK BUSH, an attorney and partner with SKADDEN, ARPS, SLATE, MEAGHER & RON, Attorney CHARLES NAFTAIN, partner with HOLLAND & KNIGHT, Pres. Minority Media & Telecommunications Council DAVID HONIG, and attorney DANIEL MARGOLLIS from The Advisory Office Of Communicative Business Opportunities of the FCC,
The next session was "What Does Your Sales Staff Need To Know To Be Effective In Today’s Competitive Marketplace?" It was moderated by PERSONAL SELLING PRINCIPLES Principal JEFFREY MYERS. He was joined on the panel by ARBITRON Dir./Sales for the Southeast Region LAURA KUTCHER, CARTER BROADCAST GROUP GSM TODD FRIES,WYCB/WOL GSM KAREN JACKSON and RADIO ONE LSM/Dir. Special Events SAM TATUM JR. The mid-morning session was titled, "Where Are The Federal Advertising Dollars Going And How Can We Get Our Share?" JIM WINSTON moderated this session. He was joined by panelists DONNA EDWARDS, Congresswoman for MARYLAND’s 4th District, BRETT SAVAGE, Sr. Market Specialist for The U.S. Postal Service, CANDACE JACKSON, Special Advisor to The Office Of The National Dir./Minority Business Development and CHARLA OVERTATANI, Chief Of Staff, Office of Congresswoman MAXINE WATERS. This session was followed by the 12th Annual Power Of Urban Radio Luncheon. The keynote speaker was FUSE ADVERTISING Chair./CEO CLIFFORD FRANKLIN. This was followed by a special presentation by FCC Commissioner ROBERT McDOWELL and a special presentation by HORIZON MEDIA CEO BILL KOENIGSBERG.
The afternoon session kicked off with a session entitled "Global Media Agency Panel Discussion." RAB SVP/Business Development TAMMY GREENBERG moderated this session. Panelists included OMD VP/Dir. Radio NATALIE SWEDSTONE, SVP/Broadcast Buying Carat JENNIFER HUNGERBUHLER, EVP/Broadcast Buying for CAMPBELL-EWALD AGENCY TOM TALBERT and SAVY MARKETING SOLUTIONS CEO ALETA CLARDY, This session was followed by "The National Marketers Presentation" moderated by ARBITRON VP/Multicultural Marketing CLARA CARNEIRO. Resource panelists included COCA-COLA Asst./VP African-American Marketing KIMBERLY PAIGE, TOYOTA MOTOR SALES USA VP/Product Communications JAMES COLO, AMERICAN FAMILY INSURANCE Regional Marketing Manager JOHN COMMISLONG, HARLEY DAVIDSON Dir/Market Outreach LAURA BRANKER.
The final session for this year's NABOB FALL Management Conference was The Radio CEO Session. TARGET MARKET NEWS Pres. KEN SMIRKLE was the discussion leader. He was joined by RADIO ONE Pres./CEO ALFRED LIGGINS, PERRY BROADCASTING Chairman/CEO RUSSELL PERRY, YMF MEDIA/ICBC BROADCAST HOLDINGS Pres./COO CHARLES WARFIELD, SHERIDAN BROADCASTING Pres. RON DAVENPORT JR. and ACCESS.1 CEO CHESLEY MADDOX-DORSEY.
