You know it's going to a special concert when the opening act is BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AND THE E STREET BAND.
The 12-12-12 concert to raise money to help victims of the Superstorm Sandy kicked off at 7:30p ET at NEW YORK's MADISON SQUARE GARDEN with THE BOSS performing "Land of Hope & Dreams." As he introduced "My City of Ruins," SPRINGSTEEN explained he wrote the song about ASBURY PARK, N.J, and described the JERSEY SHORE as an area for both the rich and poor, saying, "I pray that that characteristic remains along the JERSEY SHORE because that’s what makes it special." JON BON JOVI joined for his final song, "Born to Run."
The show closed with PAUL MCCARTNEY, who provided a memorable moment when the surviving former members of NIRVANA joined SIR PAUL on stage. FOO FIGHTERS front man DAVE GROHL performed a new song called "Cut Me Some Slack." MCCARTNEY sand "Helter Skelter" and "Live and Let Die."
In between were numerous mega-stars, including THE ROLLING STONES, who surprisingly played just two songs, "You Got Me Rockin'" and "Jumpin’ Jack Flash." MICK JAGGER had one of the funniest lines of the night, joking "This has to be the largest collection of old English musicians ever assembled in MADISON SQUARE GARDEN."
One of those other "old Englishmen" were THE WHO, which saluted their late drummer, KEITH MOON, with footage of him singing during their performance of "Bell Boy." During their performance of "Baba O'Riley," PETE TOWNSHEND addressed the reason all the stars were at the GARDEN, changing the lyrics "It's only teenage wasteland" to "It's only SANDY wasteland."
LONG ISLAND native BILLY JOEL performed several songs, PINK FLOYD founder ROGER WATERS, who was joined by PEARL JAM front man EDDIE VEDDER, ERIC CLAPTON, ALICIA KEYS, KANYE WEST and COLDPLAY's CHRIS MARTIN, who sang a duet with R.E.M. singer MICHAEL STIPE all added their voices.
Over $30 million was raised from ticket sales, with the full amount of money raised not yet released.
