THE COPYRIGHT ROYALTY BOARD ruled on FRIDAY afternoon (12/14) that royalty rates will rise over the next few years for SIRIUS XM RADIO. THE NEW YORK TIMES reports, "the rate paid by satellite radio for the use of sound recordings, currently 8% of the company’s gross revenue, would climb to 9% in 2013, and then rise 0.5 percentage point each year until reaching 11% in 2017."
The report notes the decision does not cover royalties to music publishers and songwriters.
This decision affects only satcasters, and does not set rates for webcasters, who currently have a deal in place through 2015.
