COX MEDIA GROUP (CMG)/CONNECTICUT radio stations (99.1 WPLR, STAR 99.9 WEZN and 95.9 WFOX) are gearing up the first-ever joint radiothon to raise funds in support of those affected by the NEWTOWN, CT SANDY HOOK SCHOOL tragedy. On FRIDAY, DEC. 21st, the cluster will work together to raise money for the SANDY HOOK SCHOOL Support Fund.
THE UNITED WAY is serving as an administrator of the fund. They will form a local board that will make the decisions related to disbursing funds in the community. Board members will most likely consist of NEWTOWN leaders and representatives close to the tragedy.
"Our employees and listeners want to help our SANDY HOOK neighbors in a way that is non-intrusive, but will provide substantial support for this community for years to come," CMG/CONNECTICUT VP/Market Manager KRISTIN OKESSON said. "Our goal was to team up with an established organization and fund which we knew was credible and committed to this community. After much thought, our team decided to rally together for a first ever joint radiothon to give our radio family an opportunity to assist in a big way."
From 6a-6p on FRIDAY in between regular programming, the stations will be soliciting listeners to donate to the fund. Listeners can call request lines or give online via any of the station websites, stop by a NEWTOWN SAVINGS BANK location, or drop by the CMG/CONNECTICUT studios at 440 WHEELERS FARMS ROAD in Milford. Check donations should be made out to the "SANDY HOOK SCHOOL Support Fund."
"The radio stations’ staff has worked tirelessly to cover this story appropriately and want desperately to help the community which many of our employees are connected to," CMG OM KEITH DAKIN said.
