'60s psychedelic rock icon IRON BUTTERFLY bassist LEE DORMAN, 70, died of natural causes at his home in LAGUNA NIGUEL, CA the L.A. TIMES reports. He was found dead in his car FRIDAY morning (12/21).
Born in 1942 in ST. LOUIS, DORMAN had long suffered from heart problems, which ended his music career. But in 1968, he and the rest of IRON BUTTERFLY recorded "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," a 17-minute track (edited down to three minutes to become a Top 40 hit), which helped spur the album to sell over 30 million copies. In the '70s, DORMAN formed the progressive rock band CAPTAIN BEYOND with IRON BUTTERFLY guitarist LARRY REINHARDT, DEEP PURPLE vocalist ROD EVANS and other musicians.
