Former CHICAGO BEARS All-Pro defensive tackle STEVE "MONGO" MCMICHAEL was taken off the unofficial BEARS pre-game show on ESPN Sports WMVP-A (ESPN 1000)/CHICAGO before SUNDAY's final game of the season because the station was approached for equal time by a rival candidate running against MCMICHAEL for Mayor of ROMEOVILLE, IL, reports the CHICAGO TRIBUNE.
MCMICHAEL, who filed paperwork to run for office on DECEMBER 26th, told the TRIBUNE that he was removed from the pre-game show after Mayor JOHN NOAK wrote to the station requesting equal time. "I was ready to go on and talk football," MCMICHAEL, who also coaches the INDOOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE's CHICAGO SLAUGHTER and is a former pro wrestler, told the TRIBUNE. "I by no means used that pregame show as a political platform this year. But if that's the law, it's the law, and I have to accept it."
A statement from ESPN read, "Once STEVE officially filed to run for mayor we decided it was appropriate to not have him appear on our air."
