President Orders EAS Fix

President BUSH has issued an order to DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY Secretary MICHAEL CHERTOFF to update and fix the Emergency Alert System. The 30 paragraph order directed CHERTOFF tensure that under all conditions the President can communicate with the American people." The order assigns management of a new system to FEMA and looks to involve broadcasters as well as cell phone providers. The present EAS system is technically voluntary and came under heavy criticism after Hurricane KATRINA last year.
