WFME Drops Religion For WPLJ Simulcast; Resurfaces With WRXP Calls ... But What Format?

It looks like a format change is certainly in the works at WFME (94.7)/NEW YORK. The once FAMILY-owned Religious station, recently sold to CUMULUS MEDIA, signed off the air earlier TODAY and is now simulcasting Hot AC sister WPLJ. The call letters WRXP is currently seen in the RDS of the HD.

RADIO LICENSE HOLDING X, LLC -- the company CUMULUS used to buy Religion WFME/NEWARK-NEW YORK from FAMILY STATIONS -- has applied for the call letters WRXP. WRXP were the calls of MERLIN MEDIA's Alternative WRXP (NEW ROCK 101.9)/NEW YORK before the sale to CBS RADIO and format flip to a simulcast of Sports WFAN-A.

Meanwhile, the sale of the station formally closed YESTERDAY (NET NEWS, 1/10), and many in the market have been expecting a return of the Country format to the city. But could this choice of calls indicate an Alternative or Rock direction at 94.7?

While the "NEW ROCK" format had some ratings success -- many suspect this is a smokescreen by CUMULUS.
