CURTIS SLIWA says that he had to hitchhike, endure a high-speed chase in a police cruiser, and pony up for a $400. cab ride to make it back to ABC Talk WABC-A/NEW YORK's studio in time for WEDNESDAY's show.
The NEW YORK DAILY NEWS reports that SLIWA got stranded at a bus station in ALBANY after attending the NEW YORK STATE BROADCASTERS ASSOCIATION awards TUESDAY night in LAKE GEORGE. SLIWA took the train and a ride from ALBANY to get there, but after returning to ALBANY's GREYHOUND station, he discovered that there would be no 1 am bus back to NEW YORK. With co-host RON KUBY on vacation, SLIWA, desperate to get back, made his way to the NEW YORK THRUWAY, where he attempted to hitch a ride; a state trooper picked him up, told him hitching is illegal, and took him back to the bus station when the trooper had to chase an alleged drunken driver.
After the chase, SLIWA ended up at the police station, where the cops helped him find a cabbie willing to take him back to MANHATTAN without full advance payment; SLIWA made it to WABC's MADISON SQUARE GARDEN-adjacent studios with 5 minutes to spare and plenty of material.
