UK radio regulator OFCOM is reacting to the changes in the radio industry by cutting the annual license fee for some of the nation's major commercial analog broadcasters. GCAP MEDIA's CLASSIC FM saw its fee drop 50,000 pounds to 1.16 million, while UTV's TALKSPORT and SMG's VIRGIN RADIO will both pay 100,000 pounds less. CLASSIC will pay 6% of its national ad revenue after the current license ends next year, down from the present 14%; TALKSPORT and VIRGIN will drop to zero percent (from 6% and 12%) in 2008. The moves reflect an increasing move of the industry towards digital radio.
