WBAI Pleads For Donations To Keep From Losing Transmitter Site

While it tries to get its insurer to reconsider the rejection of its post-Hurricane SANDY claim (NET NEWS 2/27), PACIFICA noncommercial Variety WBAI/NEW YORK is appealing to listeners for donations for its "Emergency Transmitter Fund," claiming "dire circumstances" and warning of a "complete shutdown" if $500,000 in funds are not raised in time.

The station says that its woes, which threaten to displace its antenna from the EMPIRE STATE BUILDING, were caused by "1) The 2008 economic collapse; 2) The devastation from Hurricane SANDY, which forced WBAI to leave our downtown location and move to temporary administrative quarters and broadcast studios; 3) The loss of revenue when our Fall Fund Drive was curtailed because of the Hurricane evacuation; (and)  4) Funds are already needed to establish WBAI in a new permanent location."
