The CRTC has approved allowing CBC RADIO 2 and ESPACE MUSIQUE to air up to four commercials per hour in a departure from the publicly-owned radio networks' noncommercial policy. The ads on the CBC's secondary networks will be allowed for a three-year term in a maximum of two ad blocks per hour.
The CBC had requested to be allowed to add advertising to the networks in a gradual manner, increasing to unlimited by the fourth year of the license term, but in granting the CBC networks a five-year license renewal, the agency chose to limit the introduction of commercials on the networks.
CBC RADIO 1 and PREMIERE CHAINE remain noncommercial. The CBC's television stations have carried advertising throughout their histories.
