Staffers at PACIFICA noncommercial Variety WBAI/NEW YORK have been told that 80% of them will be laid off by JULY 15th if the station's present financial crisis does not improve, reports the QUEENS TIMES LEDGER NEWSPAPERS.
SAG-AFTRA shop steward and WBAI News Dir. JOSE SANTIAGO told the paper that negotiations between the union and PACIFICA are set for this week. “We hope the talks are really about exploring ways to improve the station’s finances and not just PACIFICA going through the motions before kicking us to the street,” said SANTIAGO. “Our dedicated workers and the communities we serve deserve better than that.”
The station has been raising funds to maintain its EMPIRE STATE BUILDING transmitter lease and "save" the station, which has been experiencing severe financial difficulties.
