CCM+E Top 40 WHTZ (Z100)/NEW YORK got some nice ink this weekend in THE NEW YORK DAILY NEWS, as the paper noted the 30th anniversary of the station's launch. They wrote, "Thirty years ago this weekend, Z100 came screaming into the world to the sounds of the uber-tacky hit, 'Eye of the Tiger,' by the band SURVIVOR."
As exciting as the launch was -- it's the long term success that's been most amazing. "As the self-dubbed 'ZJs' of the station pass around the birthday cake this weekend," adds THE NEWS, "they can pat themselves on the back for being the #1 outlet in the city with their target demo: 18-to-34-year-olds. They can claim even stronger numbers with 18-to-34-year-old women, commanding an unchallenged 11% share of that audience in the city. That will come as a surprise to no one who has attended any of the station’s famous 'Jingle Ball' holiday concerts."
In the mood to do a little listening down memory lane? iHEARTRADIO Dir. Digital Music Programming MIKE ABRAMS has posted a scoped aircheck of the 1st day Z100 went on the air, including a snippet from before the EMPIRE STATE BUILDING transmitter was online. AUGUST 2nd, 1983. Check it out here.
