Condolences to the family and friends of URBAN RADIO BROADCASTING Country WLAY/FLORENCE-MUSCLE SHOALS, AL afternoon host KEVIN WHORTON, who died THURSDAY at 52
The station posted a statement that included, "Throughout his years on the air, KEVIN was often the first personality in the SHOALS to lend aid to various charities and families that needed assistance. His generosity and respect for those in their time of need will never be forgotten. Whenever a local emergency occurred (most recently the tornado outbreak in ALABAMA), KEVIN was the first to brave the elements and get behind the mic to inform his community of relevant information and procedures. Originally a Missourian, KEVIN loved his adopted home in ALABAMA and he will be laid to rest in the SHOALS area.
"Kevin was also a fervent supporter of MUSCLE SHOALS music and well known in the area for his ear for up and coming talent. Throughout his life, KEVIN proudly championed local artists including THE CIVIL WARS, ALABAMA SHAKES, SECRET SISTERS, JASON ISBELL, THE DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS and countless others. He was incredibly proud of their achievements and whatever small part he may have played in their success. Each year, he looked forward to assisting with the annual Spirit Of Freedom celebration in MCFARLAND PARK in FLORENCE as it gave him an opportunity to spotlight talent such as this."
