Times-Shamrock To Sell 9 Newspapers, Invest In Radio, Core Papers

TIMES-SHAMROCK COMMUNICATIONS is selling four of its daily newspapers and five alternative weeklies and intends to invest the proceeds in expanding its radio and core newspaper businesses.
The company announced MONDAY that it is selling alt-weeklies BALTIMORE CITY PAPER, CLEVELAND SCENE, ORLANDO WEEKLY, SAN ANTONIO CURRENT, and DETROIT METRO TIMES and dailies THE DAILY REVIEW (TOWANDA, PA), THE NEWS-ITEM (SHAMOKIN, PA), THE PROGRESS-INDEX (PETERSBURG, VA), and THE VIRGIN ISLANDS DAILY NEWS. It will retain its radio holdings and the NORTHEAST PENNSYLVANIA daily SCRANTON TIMES-TRIBUNE, WILKES-BARRE CITIZENS VOICE, HAZELTON STANDARD-SPEAKER, and POTTSVILLE REPUBLICAN-HERALD, plus its community papers and printing operations.
CRIBB, GREENE & ASSOCIATES is handling the sale of the dailies, while DIRKS, VAN ESSEN & MURRAY will handle selling the alt-weeklies.
