Condolences to the family and friends of NORTHSHIRE COMMUNICATIONS Alternative WEQX/MANCHESTER, VT-ALBANY, NY owner BROOKS BROWN, who passed away last FRIDAY (8/30). BROOKS was 66 years old. He was surrounded by his family, and loved ones, at ALBANY MEDICAL CENTER at the time of his passing.
He started WEQX in 1984, and the station has grown over the past 30 years into an iconic symbol of independently owned and operated radio. The integrity of the EQX brand was something BROOKS fiercely defended, and he took great pride in the station being active in the local community. BROOKS was also inducted into the VERMONT ASSOCIATION OF BROADCASTERS HALL OF FAME in 2005.
“BROOKS created something truly amazing with WEQX; he was an absolute visionary. We are grateful that his passion for music, sense of independence, and an amazing talent for engineering led him to follow his dream and start this station,” said WEQX PD JEFF MORAD.
MORAD added, "This FRIDAY (SEPTEMBER 6th) we will celebrate BROOKS’ life with a party at THE BROWN’s private residence here in MANCHESTER, following a private ceremony for family. His ashes will then be spread at sunset on SATURDAY up at the transmitter site on top of MT. EQUINOX."
The station posted on its FACEBOOK page, "A heartbreaking day in EQX-land. Goodbye to BROOKS BROWN, creator and owner of EQX. A god among men, he was a bright light of independent spirit in a sea of corporate ownership. He created an oasis of independent rock that would reach and touch all of you. He made the word about a thousand times more interesting. Thank you for EQX, and for teaching us the very definition of independence. But today, we are heartbroken."
