PORTLAND RADIO PROJECT, PRP, will be launching its brand-new stream this fall. Created by a team of established local radio professionals, PRP will offer a commercial-free mix of rock/folk/blues with quality news and a commitment to raising awareness for local causes and non-profits. A Kickstarter.com crowd-funding campaign to support the launch debuted SEPTEMBER 27th; the stream is scheduled to launch in OCTOBER 18th.
“Much of commercial radio has lost its soul,” says REBECCA WEBB, PRP’s Director/News And Public service and the project’s driving force. “Since the FCC changed the rules in the late ‘90s, allowing large corporations to own an unlimited number of stations nationwide, the community connection has been replaced by a cookie-cutter approach to serving the bottom line. Quality news and public service have been lost in the process – and music is rarely chosen by local disc jockeys.”
Targeting a primary demographic ages 25 and older, PRP’s music stream will blend classic artists such as THE BEATLES and THE ROLLING STONES with current hits and emerging artists, both local and global.
“One set might include BRUNO MARS, PATTY GRIFFIN and a local band that just rocked the house at DOUG FIR,” says Director/Music and Creative Services INESSA ANDERSON. “We promise to play today’s hits, but not 20 times a day. We will also combine an array of proven artists with exposure for new and local talent we know the audience wants to hear.”
PRP also will do regular spotlight interviews with local nonprofits to reflect its commitment to PORTLAND’s causes and issues. “Before the ownership rules changed, these organizations could count on exposure from the local media,” said WEBB. “We want them to know they will once again have a voice – on the PRP stream and website.”
PORTLAND RADIO PROJECT is seeking nonprofit status to reflect its mission of service to the community. Along with WEBB and ANDERSON, the PRP team includes other radio professionals well-known in PORTLAND, including SEAN MARTEN, CINDY HANSON and DONNA OLROYD.
