CLEAR CHANNEL Sports KVET-A (AM 1300 THE ZONE)/AUSTIN afternoon "THE SPORTS BUFFET" co-host ROD BABERS has exited as sideline reporter for UNIV. OF TEXAS football, reports the HOUSTON CHRONICLE's DAVID BARRON.
BABERS, a former LONGHORNS player, cited a "conflict of interest" between his talk show host duties and his work on the game broadcast for his resignation.
“I know there have been reports that I was fired or forced out, but that is not the case,” BABERS said. “I decided to resign. It was clearly a conflict of interest. I couldn’t do that job to the best of my ability and do a radio show and express opinions every day. I do understand that some of the people around the 40 ACRES may not have liked some of the things I was saying on my radio show. It was making the environment a little bit uncomfortable there. I wouldn’t want to be in that environment with some guys who are coaches who didn’t want me there or felt that I violated some kind of trust. It’s in everybody’s best interest.”
LONGHORNS rights holder LONGHORN IMG SPORTS MARKETING GM SCOTT WILLINGHAM said that “It was not anything that anybody wanted to see happen, Nobody asked him to do that. He wants to focus on his show. Nobody asked him to leave.”
