CUMULUS Sports KTCT-A (KNBR 1050)/SAN FRANCISCO noon-3p (ET) host DAMON BRUCE has drawn negative reaction on a national basis for his remarks last week criticizing women and "ultra-feminine" men for ruining sports, in the context of the MIAMI DOLPHINS JONATHAN MARTIN-RICHIE INCOGNITO furor. "A lot of sports has lost its way, and I'm gonna tell you, part of the reason is because we've got women giving us directions," BRUCE said, adding that "There are very few -- a small handful -- of women who are any good at this at all. That's the truth ... This is guy's stuff. This is men's stuff. And I don't expect women to understand men's stuff anymore than they should expect me to be able to relate to labor pains."
The monologue drew pans from the SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE's SFGATE.COM and high-profile websites like AWFUL ANNOUNCING, DEADSPIN, the HUFFINGTON POST and SPORTS ON EARTH. Late SUNDAY, SAN FRANCISCO media reporter RICH LIEBERMAN reported that a "source close to the situation" is saying that BRUCE has been suspended for two days and and may have been fired.
When the controversy erupted, BRUCE tweeted, " Staggering amount of people on TWITTER who don't follow me, or listen to my show, telling me what to say. Thank you for proving my point. If me pointing out men set policy / tone / rules / in sports makes me a sexist, bad guy, than 'say goodnight to the bad guy!' Yes, I'm telling everyone to take your sensitive over-reactions to things that are common -- and get off my lawn."
Over the weekend, BRUCE tweeted first, "Good morning to everyone! TWITTER lynch mob wants me hanged by my neck, till I'm dead! Today's gonna be an interesting show." Later, he added, "Thanks to all who've listened long enough to understand the last 24 hrs do not define me. Your support during the pile-on is appreciated."
