It looks like 2014 will be the year of the smartwatch, as a handful of new models are set to hit retail in the coming year. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS TIMES UK reports that SONY is expected to unveil its next generation smartwatch at the 2014 CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW in JANUARY -- just four months after it launched its first smartwatch in SEPTEMBER 2013.
The second-generation smartwatch, SmartWatch 2 (SW2), is set for release in JUNE. Also, SONY's most recent filing with the FCC cited a release in 2014 of a "BT Wrist Notifier" bearing model number SWR10. It has been approved by the FCC. The SWR10 is an NFC-enabled device and has built-in BLUETOOTH, which will enable it to pair with a wide range of compatible devices. The document does not contain any images of the smartwatch.
Meanwhile, SAMSUNG and LG have been rumored to launch their own smartwatches at the MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS next year. IBK Securities analyst LEE SEUNG-WOO told THE KOREAN HERALD that "SAMSUNG is currently working on the GALAXY GEAR 2, and the product will be surely released early next year." LG, on the other hand, is rumored to launch a flexible screen smartwatch called G Arch, as well as a fitness bracelet called the G Health, .
