GENERAL MOTORS has announced that it will include embedded 4G LTE service on some 2015 CHEVROLET models. The OnStar mobile AT&T Internet service will be included as an option on Corvette, Malibu, Impala, Volt models in the U.S. and CANADA, making the cars able to stream audio and run apps without connection to a mobile phone. Other models will later offer the option, including the Equinox, Silverado, Silverado HD, Spark and Spark EV, and, in CANADA, the Trax.
The service will include a built-in hotspot and a built-in AppShop for MyLink users to download apps for the car. Among apps announced for the service are VEHICLE HEALTH, iHEARTRADIO, PRICELINE.COM, THE WEATHER CHANNEL, NPR, SLACKER RADIO, TUNEIN RADIO, CITYSEEKER, EVENTSEEKER, GLYMPSE, and KALIKI.
Global CHEVROLET SVP ALAN BATEY said, “CHEVROLET is expected to implement the broadest deployment of 4G LTE in the automotive industry. The fact that OnStar with 4G LTE will be available in models that range from the CHEVROLET Spark to the Silverado to the Corvette, is indicative of our broad commitment to deliver more value and convenience through smart technology applications. This new, purposeful technology solution will make our consumers lives easier to connect.”
OnStar COO TERRY INCH added, “We are focused on constantly improving the OnStar service so that the system continues to remain a trusted value-add for GM drivers. 4G LTE will enable the most powerful OnStar connection ever.”
On NPR's app, NPR VP/Digital Media ZACH BRAND said, “With the GENERAL MOTORS AppShop platform, we’ve brought the best aspects of radio and digital listening to an experience smartly designed for cars. This partnership offers our domestic and international audiences the ability to listen to the best of NPR and public radio, when and how they want.”
