The NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF BLACK OWNED BROADCASTERS joined with the NATIONAL NEWSPAPERS PUBLISHERS ASSOCIATION in an amicus brief filed FRIDAY (1/17) to ask the U.S. District Court to add African-American-owned radio stations and newspapers to the list of required media outlets for tobacco companies' court-ordered "corrective statements" about the dangers of smoking.
A status conference held by Judge GLADYS KESSLER on the Justice Department's arrangement with the tobacco companies is scheduled for TODAY (1/22).
The brief charges that the tobacco companies targeted the African-American community with marketing and thus ads in black-owned media would be "more effective and complete remedy for the defendants' harmful conduct."
