Troubled PACIFICA noncommercial Variety WBAI/NEW YORK Interim PD BOB HENNELLY has been fired, reports CAPITAL NEW YORK.
HENNELLY joined WBAI in DECEMBER from a consulting slot with the DC 37 public employees union, and previously reported for crosstown NEW YORK PUBLIC RADIO noncommercial News-Talk WNYC-A-F and NEWARK PUBLIC RADIO Jazz WBGO. He had added new local programming with volunteer producers while tasked with raising funds for the financially strapped operation. HENNELLY emailed colleagues THURSDAY saying that he was let go by GM BERTHOLD REIMERS due to "PACIFICA's dysfunctional governance and the troubled WBAI business model." He added that the FEBRUARY fund drive is "not doing well" and that "the indication from management is that the station is broke."
"I do think that the Pacifica governance model has profound structural problems which keeps it inwardly focused on itself," HENNELLY wrote, "instead of on a nation and a world that so desperately needs its full attention."
