The TV station has been used for several years as a radio station, with its audio available at 87.7 FM, and has most recently aired an Alternative Q87.7 under an LMA to MERLIN MEDIA, which is moving to former MERLIN/now CUMULUS Alternative WKQX at 101.1 FM on MONDAY, FEBRUARY 17th. TRIBUNE, which owns crosstown Talk WGN-A, CW affiliate WGN-TV, and dailies the CHICAGO TRIBIUNE and RED EYE and is prevented by ownership rules from adding an FM at present, has been programming an Internet stream called WGN.FM with JONATHON BRANDMEIER as its centerpiece., and that programming is expected to be on 87,7 FM beginning on MONDAY at 1:02p (CT). WGN VP of Creative Content TODD MANLEY will oversee the new format.
WGN President/GM JIMMY DECASTRO told FEDER, “We’re outgrowing WGN with great talent. Everything we have said we wanted to do is based on the strength of WGN and our personalities. It’s all about getting the best spoken-word talent and getting more bandwidth.”
