“Tell the truth, make it matter and never be boring.” Those are three core beliefs preached by talent consultant and author VALERIE GELLER, who reiterated those points while sharing “SEVEN ESSENTIALS FOR TOP SHOWS IN THE DIGITAL AGE” during TODAY’s (2/21) final day at COUNTRY RADIO SEMINAR (CRS).
Because air personalities are competing with multiple mobile devices, GELLER said the audience needs to be informed, entertained, inspired, persuaded and connected -- now more than ever. “The gift we give is making someone not feel alone.”
As for her seven essentials for the digital age, her list included:
- Content creation.
- Uniqueness
- Caring.
- Sell it
- The formula of Product+Permanence+Promotion.
- Becoming or hiring a digital specialist.
- Great story-telling.
To the point about story-telling, GELLER believes, “There are no boring stories, only boring story-tellers.”
She also emphasized show prep, saying a great show is, “99% prep and 1% performance.” That means over-prepping and the use of one thing that happened to you in the last 24 hours, or something you overheard or observed.
GELLER’s final suggestion: Aircheck regularly and be on the lookout for content that is boring and/or lengthy. Also, strive for talkable topics, with an extra premium put on those that include humor.
