Rep. JOHN DINGELL (D-MI), the longest-serving member of the House, announced his retirement TODAY (2/24) after 58 years on CAPITOL HILL. He intends to serve through the end of his current term and will become the longest-lasting member of Congress in history on JUNE 7th.
The 87-year-old legislator was the Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, the panel that oversees communications policy through its Subcommittee on Communications and Technology, from 1981 through 1995 and again from 2007 through 2009, then served in the newly-created Chairman Emeritus position from 2009 through 2011.
NAB Pres./CEO GORDON SMITH reacted to DINGELL's announcement with a statement that read, "JOHN DINGELL has been a force of nature on CAPITOL HILL for more than a half a century, and his legislative accomplishments will stand the test of time. Upon his retirement, broadcasters will be losing a great friend, but Congress and the American people will be losing a patriot and living legend."
