Condolences to family and friends of punk rock manager and entrepreneur MARTY THAU, who died FEBRUARY 13th from complications of renal failure in RICHMOND, VA at 75, according to the NEW YORK TIMES.
THAU started his career in advertising at BILLBOARD, then as a promo rep at CAMEO/PARKWAY, BUDDAH, and PARAMOUNT and partnered in INHERIT PRODUCTIONS. Encountering the NEW YORK DOLLS at a 1972 show, he became their co-manager, then launched INSTANT RECORDS with RICHARD GOTTEHRER and CRAIG LEON, recording early tracks by the RAMONES, BLONDIE, and SUICIDE, then RED STAR RECORDS, releasing albums by RICHARD HELL AND THE VOIDOIDS, the FLESHTONES, and others.
The 1980 punk compilation "MARTY THAU Presents 2x5" included tracks by LONG ISLAND band the BLOODLESS PHAROAHS, led by a pre-STRAY CATS BRIAN SETZER.
