CBS RADIO News WNEW-F/WASHINGTON-BALTIMORE is refocusing to concentrate on the BALTIMORE market and deemphasize WASHINGTON, reports the BALTIMORE SUN's DAVID ZURAWIK.
The refocusing becomes official this morning, with WNEW opening a seven-person news bureau at the TELEVISION HILL studios of sister CBS O&O WJZ-TV and adding audio of WJZ-TV news reports as well as more traffic and weather reports including BALTIMORE area information as well as WASHINGTON. SARAH JACOBS has been named Bureau Chief of the new office.
WASHINGTON cluster SVP/Market Manager STEVE SWENSON told ZURAWIK, “The BALTIMORE-WASHINGTON corridor is one of the fastest-growing areas in the country. It is where a lot of people are moving to, and their commutes are getting longer. And that’s where we’ve got to be.”
He added that the reason for the shift is the station's signal coverage, which does not reach as much of the WASHINGTON metro as rival stations (including format champion HUBBARD News WTOP/WASHINGTON).
