A grassroots effort to change the name of WICHITA's airport by JOURNAL BROADCAST GROUP's JAN AND PHIL morning show on Classic Rock KFXJ (104.5 THE FOX) WICHITA/KN has resulted in an official name change for WICHITA’s airport. The WICHITA City Council voted today to change the airport's name from WICHITA Mid-Continent Airport to WICHITA DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER National Airport.
The WICHITA City Council had received a resolution from the City Commission of ABILENE, KN, the hometown of EISENHOWER, requesting the city of WICHITA rename the WICHITA airport for President EISENHOWER (NET NEWS 9/12/13).
Regarding when the name changes … the airport staff will need to send documents to the FAA requesting that they changed their operating license and all worldwide navigational records, then the FAA likely won’t complete the process until at least mid-summer. The name change will go into effect sometime after that.
The name-change effort was backed by an online petition submitted by JAN and PHIL. The measure also had the backing of U.S. Congressman MIKE POMPEO and former Kansas Senator BOB DOLE and the governing bodies of ABILENE among others.
