SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT CEO DOUG MORRIS will receive the SONGWRITING HALL OF FAME HITMAKER AWARD at the Annual Induction and Awards Dinner on THURSDAY, JUNE 12th at the MARRIOTT MARQUIS HOTEL in NEW YORK CITY, reports THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. The award is given annually to an artist or music industry “star maker” who has been responsible for a substantial number of hit songs.
Before becoming one of the most influential record executives for the past two decades, MORRIS started out as a songwriter of hits such as THE CHIFFONS’ ’“Sweet Talkin’ Guy” and BROWNSVILLE STATION’s “Smokin’ in the Boys Room,” Previous honorees include CLIVE DAVIS, PHIL RAMONE, WHITNEY HOUSTON, GARTH BROOKS, DIANA ROSS, GLORIA ESTEFAN and SIR TOM JONES.
SONGWRITERS HALL OF FAME Chairman JIMMY WEBB called MORRIS “a monolithic figure who is both a creative and marketing genius, emblematic of a new kind of super-executive in our business. His own success as a songwriter set the stage for a career as a hitmaker; he knows what a good song sounds like.”
SONGWRITER HALL OF FAME inductees at this year’s event include RAY DAVIES, DONOVAN, GRAHAM GOULDMAN, MARK JAMES and JIM WEATHERLY. The JOHNNY MERCER AWARD will be presented to KENNY GAMBLE and LEON HUFF.
